How are Muslim weddings celebrated?

Douglass Sarley: I'm Muslim, and I live in Saudi Arabia. You should know that the way people celebrate differs between different cultures. In my case, usually, a wedding hall is booked in a hotel if it was a big wedding. And the women are separated from the men (except for family members and the groom and bride themselves, of course). However if it was a simple family wedding we usually celebrate it together. Again, this is my culture. The way of celebration can differ in other areas of my country, or other countries....Show more

Sook Hershkowitz: Muslim wedding ceremony is usually celebrated with grandeur, like being a King & Queen for a day. Muslim wedding or 'Nikaah' (Urdu), can take place at any convenient time, because there is nothing like muhurat (the auspicious time) for the Muslims. Traditionally, the Muslim wedding is held at either the bride or the groom's home. However, in the present time, due to convenience and the availability of enough space to accom! modate the long list of guests, Muslim weddings are organized in banquet halls, auditorium as well as community centers. Wherever the wedding is held, all the rituals of the three phases of wedding are strictly followed by the Muslims, i.e. pre-wedding, wedding and post-wedding rituals. Pre-wedding rituals largely involve the exchange of sweets, fruits and visits to the bride and groom's houses. The pre-wedding rituals increase the level of excitement among the families of the bride and groom, who keenly look forward to the wedding day. The wedding is organized in an elegant and charming way, with the iman preside over the marriage terms & conditions while the culmination of the entire ceremony, known as post wedding rituals, is special in its own terms. I understand that not all Muslim weddings are the same, different countries will add its own variations & cultural influence....Show more
