Applying for a job with no professional references...?

Lorine Helwick: if they are asking for professional references, they want PROFESSIONAL references, not personal ones. Just list the names of the people you currently work for, just let them know in advance that you will be doing so.

Madge Voice: Don't waste your time with personal referee's because no-one will take you seriously. The interviewers will know that your personal referees will only give positive responses. Work related referees are the way to go as they are not biased in anyway. I'm sure that if you explain your sitaution to the interviewers they wi! ll understand. Best of luck with the interview!!

Stanton Villao: In your case, some of the reference may very well be people who will be responsible for your promotion. If that is the case, you should ask them if you can use them as your reference (well, actually, you should always ask anyone you intend on using as reference for their permission and whether they feel comfortable in providing you a positive reference). Professional reference does not have to be just your supervisors or managers. They could be your co-workers (someone others respect). Sometimes using someone on the hiring committee as a reference will backfire. It puts that person in a 'conflict of interest' situation.You can include perhaps one "Character" reference. Ideally that person should be a respected member of the community or a profession. (hint: while they may know you really well, don't just use your friends.)Good luck!...Show more

Edwina Fu: I'd put down your colleagues and as! k if the hiring authority wants a personal reference. If I wer! e the one hiring I'd go to the in-house people and probably wouldn't bother with outside references unless inside ones were too few.
