What's about the song "the streets of Philadelphia?"(Bruce Springsteen)?

Danyell Rowback: i know the song was on the soundtrack of a movie called "Philadelphia" starring tom hanks and denzel washington. in the movie, tom hanks has aids and is gay and is fired from his job at a lawfirm. i don't know if seeing the movie will give you more insight into the song...i haven't seen the movie in years. Here's a link to a site about the movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107818/plotsummarybut as for the song (and thinking about the movie), i think the man's health is fading, if not physically, then emotionally (if not both), and the man's found himself in a state of loneliness...so much to the point where he doesn't recognize himself and is struggling with his own identity. he's trying to hang on, but feeling lifeless...and i guess the irony is that he's on the streets of Philadelphia, the place of brotherly love supposedly, but not feeling too loved at the time. alone, with no friends to turn to. maybe his clothes don't fit him because physi! cally he's deteriorating. he feels like no angel's coming his way to comfort him...he's on his own right now. Seems almost as if he's ready to accept his fate. Those are my thoughts, anyway.Message board where others commented on the song that may be helpful to you http://www.usingenglish.com/forum/ask-teacher/5481......Show more

Avis Brantner: I'm a native Philadelphian. Our founders named the city as a goal to work toward. We have a town on the island I now inhabit called 'Amityville.' It has not lived up to its name either--it is the home of Ron Defeo, of the famous book, 'The Amityville Horror.'

Rana Rudell: He could be talking to anyone (this hypothetical "brother" could be him too since he sees his own reflection in a window). The song is about a time of misery in somebody's life, and the possibility of hope (a kiss, an angel...). The end of the song is open, because Philadelphia is the city of brotherly love; it is also the city of love, the city o! f hope, of all possibilities....

Hal Palowoda: It is a m! agical story about a place, "Where all the bothers love each other."Gene Wilder
